Frontier OS23 Saw Mill

The Frontier OS23 is a game-changer in our garden expansion process. It turns logs into lumber with ease. This 23-inch sawmill is the perfect solution for those who want to turn their own timber into valuable resources. Here at Hollow Acres, We are dedicated to becoming as sustainable as we can be. Having the ability to mill our own lumber is invaluable! Or at least the value of  the cost to buy the thing. If you’ve been around here recently, you’ll know that we cut down 7 very large trees. We tried several methods to clean up, move and cut the logs, and my husband Josh and I decided to invest in what works. And boy does this Frontier Sawmill work!

The OS23 comes with a powerful 14 HP Kohler engine, providing ample power to make short work of any log up to 23 inches in diameter. The solid steel frame and high-quality components ensure that this sawmill is built to last, making it the perfect addition to any homestead or small business.

Using the OS23 is really quite easy. It has a simple design and easy-to-use controls. With the help of the adjustable blade guide, I can mill accurate cuts every time, no matter the size of the log. The blade is also easy to change, making maintenance easy and hassle free.

In the spirit of honesty and transparency, i’d like to point out the 2 things that I don’t like about this sawmill.

One:  Lowering the blade before each cut is difficult for me, a woman of 5’2”. I have to climb on top of the sawmill, unscrew the red dial holding tension, and while applying a decent amount of pressure, I have to turn the lever simultaneously. Then I must screw the red dial all the way super tight, or the blade level will slip. What I think should be improved is the location and type of tension release .. thing.. To make it better accessible to smaller people.

Two: There aren’t enough slats in between the frame which makes the gaps, or open spaces,  too wide. It makes milling logs shorter than 6 feet extremely difficult. There is a risk of the log slipping and falling through the open spaces, which could in turn damage the mill, snap a moving blade and send it ricocheting with the possibility of hurting someone. To improve this, I would add 2 or 3 additional slats for safety reasons, and for ease of use with shorter logs.

Overall, We love the Sawmill. We use it multiple times a week to cut logs in various sizes. 100% worth every penny.
